With a microlight on a biz trip from Germany to the UK?
Well, sometimes it just happens. The dates are fixed on short notice, the weather is fine so why waste your time on airports, being bothered by security and delays, remote sites and rental cars? Sometimes, it's just right so the decision is simple. The overall preparation is less than an hour, UK-AIP is available on the web and I was in the very lucky position that all my dates were in walking distance to airfields I could use with a microlight.
10.5 hrs total flying time, 120 ltrs super unleaded 95 consumed at an average of 107 kts which could have been far more but the VFR corridor south of Amsterdam is a "below 1200 ft" rule and with bumby air, a microlight needs a little speed adjustment here. No taxis were needed and British hospitality, British pubs and country side hotels are legendary anyway. That fuel consumption number is a little unfair. The aircraft is equiped with a highly efficient adjustable prop so the 110-120 kts cruise tag is reached at abt. 4.000 rpm. The taildragger is a little less resistant than the nose wheel.
Well, I didn't do that the first time. That helped a little, of course. That stable weather stretching out for nearly 700 miles was rare as well. Plus the lucky coincidence of the client location. Enjoy the pics.
